According to Stefanie Mazer, PsyD, a Florida-based psychologist, “Red has always been linked to confidence and attraction, so it is indeed natural that wearing it makes people feel more visible.” She explains that the color red can boost confidence, leading individuals to behave differently, which in turn attracts attention.

This concept blends color psychology with dating strategies. But can a manicure truly influence romance? We consulted with psychology and beauty experts to explore the validity of the red nail theory.

The Psychology Behind Red Nail Theory

Red is a color often associated with strong psychological responses. Mazer notes, “It’s historically been associated with passion, vigor, and power, which helps it stand out from neutral colors.”

The modern iteration of the red nail theory gained traction in 2022, when Robyn DelMonte (@GirlBossTown) posted a TikTok about the phenomenon.

However, Chantal McFerran, a marketing professor at York University, suggests the theory might stem from a time when red nail polish was more common, possibly recalling a mother or grandmother who always wore the shade.This nostalgia could contribute to the color’s appeal.

Helena Mounesa noted, “The guy I’m seeing loves red… it just captures people’s attention,” adding that she received compliments on her red nails even when they were not freshly done.

One woman recounted her boyfriend’s intense reaction: “You were holding my hand,and every time I felt your nails against my skin,I felt a little dizzy… all I could think of was your nails clawing my back.”

Kaitlin Vogel tested the theory with clothing, sharing, “I was wearing a red dress at the airport a few weeks ago, and two different men approached me…Red nails and a red dress!”
