(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 19 – The Crui-Cnr-Infn working table on the ethics of scientific research was established today. The group, made up of representatives of universities and research institutions, open to the entire Italian scientific community, will address the crucial issue of freedom of research and the ways in which this intersects with ethical issues.
In the inaugural meeting, the group began a reflection on the autonomy of research and reiterated the need for it to always keep in mind the centrality of the person and the peaceful progress of humanity, especially in the phase of transformation of science into technologies that have significant impacts on the life of human communities.
All the institutions involved in the table underlined how scientists “believe in open, democratic, ethical and responsible science”. Nonetheless, “they are fully aware of the complexity in which they currently operate and have consolidated over time ethical lines for the development of research activities, consistent with European indications”.
Many interventions, in reiterating that research “can only be free, autonomous and transnational”, underlined the fact that “freedom inevitably entails responsibility”. Universities and research bodies intend to continue discussing this to update their practices and harmonize them with the best European practices,
