Real ID Deadline Looms: DMV Expands Services for Senior Citizens

With the federal Real ID enforcement date rapidly approaching, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is taking steps to ensure accessibility for all residents, especially senior citizens who may face challenges with the online submission process. These measures include extended hours at select DMV locations and a renewed emphasis on in-person assistance.

Addressing Digital Divide: In-Person Assistance for Real ID Applications

Recognizing that online pre-registration can be a hurdle for some, especially seniors unfamiliar with digital platforms, the DMV is reinforcing its commitment to providing in-person support. Previously, applicants were encouraged to create an online account and upload necessary documents via the DMV website (RealId.dmv.ca.gov). This process, while efficient for many, presented difficulties for those less cozy with computers.

If you have difficulty in registering online pre -registration such as seniors, you can visit the local office to apply for real ID.

California DMV Official Statement

Park Kwan-il,a senior center secretary general, lauded the move, stating that allowing in-person applications without mandatory online accounts would significantly ease the process for Korean-speaking seniors and others facing similar technological barriers. this approach aligns with broader efforts to bridge the digital divide, ensuring equitable access to essential services.

Document Planning and Extended Hours: Streamlining the Real ID Process

To further expedite the in-person application process, the DMV emphasizes the importance of preparing required documents in advance. Applicants must provide two forms of proof of California residency, such as utility bills, bank statements, vehicle registration certificates,or mobile phone bills. The DMV also highlights the availability of Korean-speaking staff at the Hollywood DMV location to assist members of the Korean community.

Furthermore, select DMV offices across Southern California are extending their operating hours to accommodate the anticipated surge in Real ID applications. As of today, April 15, 2025, fourteen offices are opening early, at 7:00 AM (excluding Wednesdays), on Mondays, tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays until June 27th. These locations include:

  • Southern Oaks
  • Van Nuys
  • Arleta
  • Glendale
  • Pasadena
  • Culver City

Real ID Requirements and Alternatives: what You Need to Know

Starting July 7th, 2025, adults aged 18 and older will be required to present a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another acceptable form of federal identification (such as a passport or permanent resident card), to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities. The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

While the deadline is approaching,it’s important to remember that a valid U.S. passport remains an acceptable form of identification for these purposes. For those who prefer to avoid the DMV altogether,a passport offers a convenient choice.
