Rays Pitcher Hunter Bigge Hospitalized After Being Hit by Foul Ball

Hunter Bigge, a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, was hospitalized after being struck in the face by a foul ball during thursday night’s game. The incident occurred in the dugout during the game against the Baltimore Orioles.
The incident occurred in the top of the seventh inning when Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman hit a sharp foul ball into the Tampa Bay dugout on the first base side. The ball struck Bigge, a 27-year-old right-hander who is currently on the injured list with a lat strain.
According to Rays manager kevin Cash, Bigge remained conscious and was able to communicate with first responders after the incident. He was placed on a backboard and gave a thumbs up to the crowd as he was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
Emergency medical personnel responded quickly to the scene.Visibly concerned Rays players knelt on the field as Bigge received medical attention before being loaded onto a stretcher and carted off the field. The crowd at Steinbrenner Field gave Bigge a standing ovation as he was taken away.
Cash confirmed after the game that “Bigge was struck in the face.” Statcast reported that the ball left Rutschman’s bat at 105 mph.
After an eight-minute delay, the game resumed, with Baltimore ultimately winning 4-1.
Bigge was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the 2019 amateur draft from Harvard. He made his major league debut on July 9 of last year. He was then traded to Tampa Bay along with Christopher Morel and minor leaguer Ty Johnson for All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes just 19 days later.
In his career, Bigge has made 32 appearances, including one start, with a 2.51 ERA and one save. This season, he has a 2.40 ERA in 13 relief outings, covering 15 innings.
