For the first time, the authorities have detected an Alpine bat in Basel-Stadt. With this find, the canton already counts 23 of the 30 bat species found in Switzerland. The animal was found injured at Centralbahnplatz in August.

(Keystone-SDA) It was taken to the emergency care center for bats, as the Construction and Transport Department (BVD) announced on Wednesday. This identified the species, nursed it back to health and later released it near the site where it was found.

The example clearly shows how important discovery reports are, wrote the BVD. A month earlier, the authorities in the neighboring canton of Baselland had identified an alpine bat for the first time.

The evidence of the Alpine bat presence is very pleasing for the region, as many bats in Switzerland are under great pressure, according to the communiqué. Many of the 30 species are endangered or have not been detected in the canton of Basel-Stadt since the turn of the millennium.

Bats in residential areas are suffering from the loss of suitable shelter and light pollution. The nocturnal hunters also rely on dark habitats in the city. Dark corridors such as tree avenues with dense treetops or unlit rows of houses help the animals fly from their daytime sleeping quarters to the hunting area, as they say.
