Rail Baltica: Defense & Military Mobility – Mieriņa on EU Role

Not only the Baltic States, but also Europe, including Ukraine, will benefit from the Rail Baltica project. This railway connection is important in our safety and protection. The Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa emphasized on Thursday, October 9, meeting with the European Commission’s Defense and Space Commissioner Andrew Kubil (Andrew Kubilius).

The Speaker of the Saeima emphasized that the importance of this rail was initially different, but at the moment we are completely different in geopolitical conditions and face widespread security challenges. The parties agreed that Rail Baltica is an important project not only in regional connectivity but also in military mobility. In the future, it will become an important bridge between the Baltic States, Poland and Ukraine. D. Mieriņa urged the Commissioner to grant the Rail Baltica’s status of the military project and emphasized its economic potential.

A. Kubili was highlighted as a priority for the strengthening of the eastern border of the European Union (EU) and the development of so -called drone walls, or antidron capabilities, to protect the external border of the EU. The European Commission’s approach to the eastern border of the EU emphasizes the need for increased protection in our region.

When discussing support for Ukraine, D. Mieriņa said that the EU should accelerate the decision -making rate and the funding allocated to be more flexible so that Ukraine can use it as soon as possible. A. Kubilus emphasized that the military support of European countries has reached EUR 60 billion for Ukraine as a whole, as well as the freezed Russian assets from European countries will soon be in the hands of Ukraine.

Raimonds Bergmanis, Chairman of the Saeima Defense Commission, also participated in the meeting with the Speaker of the Saeima.
