Frankfurt – The raccoon roundworm Baylisascaris procyonis has established itself in nine European countries and is continuing to spread. Germany is a main distribution area. This is what a Frankfurt research team from the joint project ZOWIAC (Zoonotic and wildlife ecological effects of invasive carnivores) reports in the specialist magazine Parasitology Research (2025, DOI: 10.1007/s00436-025-08611-z).
The raccoon roundworm came to Europe with the first raccoons from North America at the beginning of the 20th century. Since the raccoon was released or escaped from fur farms, it has spread uncontrollably across large parts of Central Europe – and with it its parasite. Germany is now considered the main distribution area for both species in Europe.
