Questioning Logic: A Deep Dive

by drbyos

CULTURE. Nearly 90 people attended, Thursday, December 11, the conference “Are we logical?”, organized by the University of Permanent Culture (UCP) and held at the Palace.

To the question “are we logical?” », Evelyne Vergnou first replied: “Sometimes yes, we are, and sometimes no. » But the sharing of her point of view did not stop there, since if the doctor of philosophy was present, Thursday, December 11, at the Palace, it was to support her remarks on this subject at greater length.

First, she discussed the origins of logic and the link with language in the Greek language. “Logic was founded by Aristotle to combat the sophists who used fine words to achieve success in business and politics,” the speaker said, adding that “logic serves true thinking and not self-interest.”

Then, a list of false reasoning was made, including for example reasoning by analogy or by induction. Still according to Evelyne Vergnou, dialectical logic appeared with Marxism: “History progresses through the opposition of classes fighting against each other. Bourgeois capitalism against the proletariat in the 19th century. The latter will put an end to History and its internal logic, installing communism with a failure of this prediction. »

The doctor then emphasized that logic also materializes in the architecture of cities. “It is New York which is resurrecting the rational city, invented by the Greek Hippodamos of Miletus, in the 5th century BC,” finally indicated the speaker.

The next UCP conference will take place Thursday, December 18, at 2:30 p.m., at the Cœur de Ville space. It will be given by Claude Le Flohic and will have the theme “The train will whistle three times (1952): a political fable”.
