Quebec Power Outage: 240,000+ Homes Hit by Strong Winds

More than 240,000 Quebec homes were without electricity this Tuesday morning due to outages caused on the Hydro-Québec network by strong winds.

According to the most recent report from the state corporation, around 7:50 a.m., 243,588 addresses are currently without power across the province.

Hydro-Québec indicates that strong winds are currently sweeping a large part of the province, with gusts of up to 90 km/h and up to 120 km/h in places, which is causing outages on the electrical network.

The most affected regions are Montérégie, with 69,731 addresses without electricity, followed by Lanaudière (50,895), the Laurentians (31,265) and Montreal (26,732).

Significant outages are also reported in Outaouais (12,588 addresses), in the Capitale-Nationale (8,633), in Laval (8,948), in Chaudière-Appalaches (7,608) and in Bas-Saint-Laurent (7,604).

Estrie also has 6,076 homes without power, while Mauricie has 6,922.

The state-owned company specifies that more than 1,100 workers are deployed on the ground in order to intervene safely and restore service as quickly as possible.

Windy weather with gusts up to 120 km/h

These outages are caused by unpredictable weather, with snow squalls and strong winds forecast for Tuesday.

The federal agency is forecasting gusts of 50 to 60 km/h reaching 90 km/h in the morning in most sectors of Quebec.

This windy weather will be accompanied by a few showers of rain or snow depending on the area.

On the other hand, the weather will be colder, since the mercury will dip back below freezing point.
