Qualcomm Wins Key Victory in Chip Licensing Battle with Arm
In a major win for Qualcomm, a jury ruled that the chip giant’s central processors, based on technology acquired from Nuvia, are properly licensed under its agreement with Arm Holdings. This decision clears the way for Qualcomm to continue selling its chips, powering what it calls the "AI PC," in the increasingly competitive laptop market.
Qualcomm Vindicated, Arm Seeks Retrial
The contentious trial in US federal court stemmed from a dispute over royalty rates Qualcomm should pay for each chip. Arm, the designer of ubiquitous chip architectures, argued that Qualcomm was unfairly leveraging its purchase of Nuvia, which had agreed to pay higher licensing fees, to underpay for its own chips.
While the jury found in Qualcomm’s favor on key points, it was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on whether Nuvia itself had breached its licensing agreement with Arm. Arm vowed to seek a new trial, expressing disappointment over the jury’s inability to reach a consensus on all claims. Judge Maryellen Noreika, presiding over the case, encouraged both parties to engage in mediation to resolve the remaining issues.

This outcome has significant ramifications for the semiconductor industry. Qualcomm’s rival in the AI PC market, Nvidia, as well as AMD and MediaTek, are also developing Arm-based processors.
