The pursuit of longevity has led researchers down numerous paths, from studying the molecular intricacies of aging to exploring potential drug interventions. Recently,a scientist detailed experiments with the nematode worm C. elegans, a popular model organism in aging research due to its short lifespan of 15 to 40 days, allowing for rapid experimentation. The scientist noted that approximately 40% of drugs that extend lifespan in C. elegans also demonstrate similar effects in mice.

Though, the leap from animal models to human submission remains a meaningful hurdle.As one scientist stated, “To me, that’s not an amazing hit rate. And we don’t know how many of those drugs will work in people. Probably less than 40% of that 40%.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding that the underlying mechanisms of aging are far from fully understood, and translating findings from simple organisms to humans is a complex challenge.

The complexity of aging at the cellular level was further highlighted by scientists presenting work on chemical reactions. the sheer volume of unknown factors suggests that achieving a comprehensive understanding of aging at the molecular level could take decades. Relying solely on a traditional research pipeline-worms, mice, then humans-may significantly delay progress. This has led some researchers to consider choice approaches, such as replacement therapy, as a more immediate solution.

“Replacement is a really exciting avenue because you don’t have to understand the biology of aging as much,” says Sierra Lore, who studies aging at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, California. Lore, who initially focused on the molecular aspects of aging, shifted her research towards replacement therapies. She explains, “I very quickly realized we’re decades away [from understanding the molecular processes that underlie aging]. Why don’t we just take what we already know-replacement-and try to understand and apply it better?”
