Purvītis Prize 2025: Exhibition Showcases Latvia’s Visual Art Excellence

An exhibition featuring the finalists for the prestigious Purvītis Prize 2025 is now open, highlighting the best of Latvian visual arts from the past two years. The winner will be announced in May.

A Festivity of Latvian Visual Art

The Latvian art scene is currently ablaze with creativity as the exhibition showcasing the nominees for the Purvītis Prize 2025 opens its doors. This year’s exhibition, curated by Daiga Rudzāte, features a diverse collection of works from eight finalists selected by autonomous experts. These artists and collectives represent the pinnacle of visual art in Latvia, showcasing their talent through painting, graphics, sculpture, objects, and installations.

The Finalists: A Diverse Range of artistic Expression

Among the esteemed finalists are indrikis Gelzis, Romans Korovin, Ieva Kraule Rukšāne, Krišs Salmanis, Elza Sīle, and Paula Cell. Their works, along with those of two other finalists, represent a broad spectrum of artistic styles and approaches, reflecting the dynamic and evolving nature of Latvian contemporary art.The selection process began with 24 nominated artists/groups, all recognized for their significant contributions to the Latvian visual arts landscape between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024.

The Purvītis Prize: Elevating Latvian Art

Established in 2008, the Purvītis Prize stands as Latvia’s most significant visual arts award. Its mission is to consistently identify and celebrate outstanding achievements in Latvian professional visual arts. The prize aims to stimulate analysis and intensity within the Latvian art scene, foster the advancement of innovative projects and original concepts, and promote the accomplishments of Latvian artists both domestically and internationally. This aligns with a broader European trend of supporting the arts; for example, the Turner Prize in the UK has a similar goal of promoting contemporary British art.

International Jury to Decide the Winner

The ultimate decision of who will receive the Purvītis Prize 2025 rests with a distinguished international jury comprised of seven art professionals. They will assess the overall exhibition of the eight finalists, considering the artistic merit, innovation, and impact of their work. The highly anticipated announcement of the winner is scheduled for May 23rd, marking a pivotal moment for Latvian visual arts.
