Impending Strike Looms Over Sofia’s Public Transportation System
Sofia’s public transport system faces potential disruption as workers initiate preparations for an indefinite strike. Unions representing transport employees are actively gathering signatures, signaling a critically important escalation in their ongoing dispute with the Sofia Municipality over wages and working conditions. This action follows a series of protests and failed negotiations, raising concerns about the future of public transit in the Bulgarian capital.
Union Leaders Cite Broken Negotiations, Demand Action
Key figures within the Federation of Transport Unions (FTS) at CITUB and the Federation of Transport Workers at Podkrepa Laboratory have voiced strong criticism of Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, accusing him of obstructing meaningful dialog. Alexander Shopov, chairman of the FTS,confirmed that signature collection is underway across all sectors of Sofia’s public transport, including the Metropolitan EAD.Ivan Kirilov, chairman of the Federation of Transport Workers, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the signature drive aims to meet the legal requirement of securing support from at least half of the public transport workforce within a two-day period to authorize a strike under the Law on the Settlement of Collective Labor Disputes.
The protest of workers will continue Saturday and Sunday if no miracle happens.

Kirilov further indicated that unless a resolution is reached imminently, protests will continue thru the weekend. The unions are seeking a formal invitation from the Sofia Municipality to resume negotiations, expressing frustration over what thay perceive as a breakdown in interaction.
“Worthy Labor, Decent Pay”: The Core of the Dispute
The current unrest stems from a long-standing demand for improved wages and working conditions. The ongoing strike by ground transport workers, which began on Wednesday under the banner worthy labor – a decent pay! Without transport there is no economy
, highlights the depth of discontent among public transport employees. While ground transport remains affected, the Sofia subway is operating with increased frequency and capacity to mitigate the impact on commuters.
Impact and Implications for Sofia Residents
The potential indefinite strike raises serious concerns about disruptions to daily life for Sofia residents. Public transportation is a vital service, and any prolonged stoppage could have significant economic and social consequences. As of today, the subway system is working to compensate for the strike. The situation underscores the importance of resolving labor disputes promptly and effectively to ensure the continued functioning of essential public services.
According to recent data from the Sofia Municipality, public transport serves approximately 600,000 passengers daily. A prolonged strike could force many commuters to seek alternative transportation, possibly leading to increased traffic congestion and air pollution. The economic impact on businesses and individuals could also be significant.
Looking Ahead: The path to Resolution
The coming days will be crucial in determining whether a resolution can be reached to avert a full-scale strike. the unions are awaiting a response from the Sofia Municipality, and the willingness of both parties to engage in constructive dialogue will be essential. The citizens of Sofia are watching closely, hoping for a swift and equitable solution that restores stability to the city’s public transport system.
