On November 7, 2025, the Playstation 5 Pro celebrates its first anniversary. With this version, Sony heralded the middle of the current generation of consoles. At the same time, the rumors are closer to the successor. According to an insider gaming report, PlayStation 6 should support an interchangeable drive – similar to how it has been with the PS5 since 2023.
The sources speak of the fact that Sony wants to offer the upcoming model in two variants: buyers can choose a version with pre -installed drive or choose a cheaper version without choosing. If you want to rely on physical data carriers later, you should be able to acquire the drive separately and can easily retrofit.
Sony thus pursues two central goals. On the one hand, the production costs can be reduced because only a console base needs to be built. The optical drive is produced separately and can be sold independently. On the other hand, this approach reflects the clear trend towards digital game sales. More and more players download their titles and do without discs, which makes a permanently installed drive to be dispensable for many users.
But it is not yet possible without a drive. According to the report, Sony is not planning a purely digital console, at least not in the next generation. Although the company works on a handheld that works without an optical media, the stationary console has the opportunity to use games in a physical form. This ensures Sony that players with a preference for collector editions or the resale of discs will continue to be taken into account.
The PlayStation community has already got used to this concept because it was introduced with the slimmer PS5 version. Accordingly, there are no great resistance to the PS6. On the contrary: many see the advantage of a cheaper entry version, while those who value classic game media remain flexible.
Everything indicates that Sony is looking for the balance between digital progress and the usual hardware option with the next generation. The PS6 could thus hit the bridge into an increasingly digital gaming future without excluding the long-standing fans of physical data carriers.
