The representative of the Republic for Madeira receives the PS and PSD this Friday, and closes the hearings for parties with parliamentary representation, after the dismissal of the president of the regional Government and the consequent dismissal of the executive of the PSD/CDS-PP coalition with the PAN parliamentary support. After leaving the meeting with Ireneu Barreto, the president of the Socialist Party in the region Paulo Cafofo defended the scheduling of early elections.

“With the dissolution of the regional government, it is not acceptable for us to have an appointed government. With an appointed government it would be about a month and a half until the dissolution of the regional Assembly and precisely it would fall. There wasn’t even time to approve a budget. We cannot be creating a problem on top of other problems”, stated Paulo Cafofo upon leaving the meeting at the Palácio de São Lourenço.

The clearest way to resolve this is to have early elections. Give people back their say”, highlighted the former mayor of Funchal and current Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities.

For Paulo Cafofo, it is necessary to “guarantee that this government, being a government that continues in management (…) will not cause Madeira to stop”.

Madeira will not stop with a management government. We have already had other governments that are in management, other local authorities that have been in management. And we had a budget too and that’s not what they stopped.”

According to the president of PS Madeira, the archipelago needs “a word of tranquility, of serenity. We cannot admit that there is blackmail, that there is fear, or that people want to cause social alarm and panic, with the clear objective of benefiting the parties that are currently in power, whether for their own benefit or to continue promiscuity and cause favoritism that we have witnessed in the midst of this mega-process”.

Paulo Cafofo classifies as blackmail the possibility of publicizing the idea that “Madeira will stop, that people will not have salaries, there will be no reforms, the works will stop, the PRR and community funds are compromised ”.

Madeira will not stop because it does not have a budget, nor will it stop because it has a management government”, he finished.

In recent days, the representative of the Republic heard BE, PAN, IL, PCP, CDS-PP, Chega and Juntos Pelo Povo, and the possibility of early elections in the archipelago divided the party forces.

The CDS-PP, which is part of the coalition that governs Madeira, defended that the solution to the political crisis is the inauguration of a new Government, validated by a motion of confidence in the regional parliament.

PCP, Chega and JPP, on the contrary, informed the representative of the Republic that they support the holding of new elections.

Communists say that Madeira lives in a political swamp. Chega considers that the current PSD is mortally wounded. Juntos pelo Povo speaks of “political fraud” on the part of the coalition that governs Madeira.

After this round of hearings, the representative will make a decision on the governmental situation in Madeira, once
