Thousands Rally on EDSA to Demand Duterte’s Impeachment
On Friday, thousands of protesters gathered on EDSA, calling for the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte. The movement is fueled by three impeachment complaints alleging misconduct and misuse of public funds. Despite denial from Duterte and opposition from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whom she succeeded in case of incapacity, nearly 4,000 demonstrators took to the People Power Monument. Police deployed 7,400 riot officers to ensure security.
Protesters wore white shirts and carried placards demanding “Impeach! Impeach Sara now!” Days before Congress adjourns for midterm elections in May, there remains strong pressure on lawmakers to address the impeachment complaints.
Filipino Police Colonel Dies in Washington Midair Collision
The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced the tragic death of Colonel Pergentino N. Malabed, chief of the PNP Supply Management Division, in a midair collision between an American Airlines jetliner and a U.S. Army helicopter over Washington, D.C. Malabed had traveled to the U.S. on January 22 for a pre-delivery inspection of armored vests bought by the PNP Directorate for Logistics.
“His untimely passing is a profound loss to the PNP, where he served with honor, integrity, and dedication throughout his career,” PNP officials stated.
4PS Leads Party-List Voter Preference in SWS Survey
According to the Social Weather Stations (SWS) January 2025 Pre-Election Survey, the Pagtibayin at Palaguin ang Pangkabuhayang Pilipino (4PS) party-list topped party-list voter preference, securing 11.80 percent of intended votes. This ahead of projected midterm elections. Duterte Youth placed second with 6.05 percent, and ACT-CIS took third with 5.41 percent.
The top three party-lists are guaranteed specific seats in the House of Representatives based on their respective vote percentages.
Philippines Highlights Economic Growth at 2025 World Economic Forum
The Philippines showcased its economic achievements at the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Leading the Philippine delegation were House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Finance Secretary Ralph Recto, Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Aldeguer-Roque, and key Filipino business leaders. BSP Considers Rate Cut as GDP Growth Misses Target
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona Jr. announced that another interest rate cut is under consideration due to sub-target GDP growth. Last year, the nation’s GDP grew by 5.6 percent, missing the government’s target of 6.0-6.5 percent. Frequent typhoons contributed to this slowdown.
The BSP envisions the output gap remaining negative until 2025 but expects closure by 2026 as economic momentum strengthens.
