On January 26, 2025, India celebrated its 76th Republic Day with a grand procession and ceremony in New Delhi. This year’s event marked a significant milestone as it commemorated 75 years since the enactment of the Indian Constitution. The day was filled with patriotism, unity, and rich cultural displays, reflecting India’s diverse heritage and military prowess.
Prime Minister’s Tradition Alive
Prime Minister Narendra Modi continued his Republic Day tradition by walking down the Kartavya Path after the parade. Greeted by an enthusiastic crowd, he encouraged the attendees with a display of overwhelming patriotism. The cheering and clapping as he passed by were a testament to the public’s support and love for their leader. Modi also crossed over to the other side of the Kartavya Path to interact further with the crowd, taking time to capture memorable moments with them.
President Droupadi Murmu and Key Guests
The Republic Day celebrations were presided over by President Droupadi Murmu, who unfurled the national flag at Kartavya Path, New Delhi. Accompanying her was President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia, the Chief Guest for the event. Both leaders were driven in the ‘Traditional Buggy,’ a practice that had been revived after a 40-year gap. This iconic vehicle symbolized an important tradition in Indian festivities. Upon arrival, they were greeted by Prime Minister Modi, along with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and his wife Sudesh Dhankhar.
Ceremony and Parade Highlights
The celebration commenced with the unfurling of the Indian national flag, followed by the playing of the National Anthem and a 21-gun salute using indigenous 105-mm Light Field Guns. This year’s theme, “Jan Bhagidari” (public participation), underscored the importance of community involvement in national events. The parade began with a performance by 300 cultural artists who played “Sare Jahan Se Achha” on traditional instruments like Shehnai, Nadaswaram, Mashak Been, Flute, Sankha, Tutari, and Dhol. The symphony echoed the dreams and pride of over a billion Indians.
Display of Military Might and Cultural Diversity
A spectacular flower-petal shower was carried out by Mi-17 1V helicopters in the Dhwaj Formation, symbolizing the national flag. This breathtaking display was led by Group Captain Alok Ahlawat. Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding of Delhi Area, commanded the parade, with Major General Sumit Mehta serving as the Parade Second-in-Command.
Honoring our Brave Servicemen
The parade also paid tribute to gallantry award winners, including Param Vir Chakra recipients Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Yogendra Singh Yadav (Retd) and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar (Retd), and Ashok Chakra recipient Lt Col Jas Ram Singh (Retd). These brave individuals were recognized for their extraordinary acts of courage and bravery. The Param Vir Chakra is the highest military honor in India, awarded for conspicuous bravery in the face of the enemy, while the Ashok Chakra honors similar acts of courage outside combat situations.
Global Participation Adding to Unity
Adding to the sense of unity and international camaraderie, the Indonesian National Armed Forces Marching Contingent, comprising 152 members, and the Military Band of Indonesia’s Military Academy, with 190 members, participated in the parade. This global element showcased the strong bilateral ties between India and Indonesia and highlighted the shared respect between the two nations.
Celebrating Unity and Diversity
The Republic Day celebrations are a symbol of India’s cultural and military strength. They bring together diverse communities from across the nation to celebrate the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution—unity, equality, development, and democracy. Through colorful performances and parades, the event reminds each Indian citizen of their responsibilities and the proud legacy they inherit.
As the 76th Republic Day parade reached its climax, the spirit of patriotism was palpable throughout New Delhi. The event served as a powerful reminder of the nation’s unity, resilience, and the sacrifices of those who have served the country.
