From Inception to Operation: A Timeline
the genesis of HMGMA can be traced back to discussions with the Trump management, emphasizing the importance of foreign direct investment in the U.S. economy. Construction commenced in 2022, culminating in the plant’s full operational status in early 2025.
Production Capabilities and Future models
HMGMA boasts an extraordinary annual production capacity of 300,000 units, situated on a sprawling 11.76 million square meter site – four times the size of Yeouido. The plant initiated test production with the Ionic 5
electric vehicle in October of the previous year and has commenced production of the Ionic 9
, a large-scale electric SUV, this month. Future plans include the production of Kia models starting next year, with the Genesis luxury brand to follow. Furthermore, recognizing the growing demand for hybrid vehicles in the U.S. market, HMGMA is slated to produce hybrid cars through facility upgrades beginning next year.

This represents a ample increase from the current 700,000 units produced per year. In 2024, local production accounted for 41% of the 1,708,293 units sold in the U.S. Once the 1.2 million unit production system is fully operational, the proportion of locally produced vehicles is projected to rise to 71%, strengthening HMG’s position in the competitive US automotive market.

By increasing domestic production, HMG not only mitigates tariff risks but also demonstrates a long-term commitment to the U.S. market. The plant’s ability to produce a range of vehicles, including electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engine models, positions HMG to capitalize on evolving consumer preferences and regulatory landscapes. As the automotive industry undergoes a rapid transformation, investments like HMGMA will be crucial for manufacturers seeking to maintain a competitive edge and secure their future in key global markets.
