Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) has officially inaugurated its Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Bryan County, Georgia, marking a notable expansion of its manufacturing footprint in the United States. the state-of-the-art facility, representing an $8 billion investment, aims to mitigate the impact of tariffs by increasing domestic production and solidifying HMG’s commitment to the American market.

The completion ceremony, held on March 26th, was a high-profile event attended by key figures from Hyundai Motor Group, including Chairman Jeong Wi-sung and Vice Chairman Jang Jae-hoon, alongside government officials such as Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, U.S. Representative Buddy Carter,and the South Korean Ambassador to the United States. The presence of these dignitaries underscores the strategic importance of HMGMA to both the company and the region.

Chairman Jeong highlighted the connection between a 2019 meeting with then-President Trump in Seoul and the subsequent decision to create over 8,500 jobs in Savannah,Georgia. Construction commenced in 2022, culminating in the plant’s full operational status in early 2025.

Production Capabilities and Future models

HMGMA boasts an extraordinary annual production capacity of 300,000 units, situated on a sprawling 11.76 million square meter site – four times the size of Yeouido.The plant initiated test production with the Ionic 5 electric vehicle in October of the previous year and has commenced production of the Ionic 9, a large-scale electric SUV, this month. Future plans include the production of Kia models starting next year, with the Genesis luxury brand to follow. Furthermore, recognizing the growing demand for hybrid vehicles in the U.S. market, HMGMA is slated to produce hybrid cars through facility upgrades beginning next year.

Expanding US Production and Market Share

Combining HMGMA’s output with the existing Hyundai Motor Alabama and Kia Georgia plants, HMG aims to establish a production system capable of manufacturing 1.2 million vehicles annually. In 2024, local production accounted for 41% of the 1,708,293 units sold in the U.S. Once the 1.2 million unit production system is fully operational, the proportion of locally produced vehicles is projected to rise to 71%, strengthening HMG’s position in the competitive US automotive market.
