Prabowo Subianto Emphasizes Constructive Criticism for Effective Governance
Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has stressed the importance of constructive criticism and oversight in ensuring effective governance. During the 17th anniversary celebration of the Gerindra Party, held at the Sentul City International Convention Center in Bogor on Saturday, February 15, 2025, Prabowo highlighted the role of opposition parties in strengthening his administration.
Embracing Outside Criticism
“They will correct us. They will improve us. They will oversee us,” Prabowo declared. He believes that criticism should be aimed at improving the government’s performance rather than driven by personal grievances. This open-door policy for constructive feedback underscores Prabowo’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
The Importance of Political Unity
Despite the Gerindra Party’s historical rivalry with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Prabowo underlines the importance of unity post-election. He points out that while parties may compete during elections, unity is essential once the election season ends. “If necessary, then yes, but if not, it’s also fine,” he clarified, emphasizing that unity does not necessarily mean all parties must join the government.
A Democratic System Without Animosity
Prabowo views Indonesian democracy as a system where political actors collaborate rather than confront each other. He refers to opposing parties as “comrades” rather than “political opponents,” advocating for a more harmonious political environment. “I even think it’s wrong to use the term political opponents. There are no political opponents,” he stated during the celebration.
Cooperation Among Elites
In his address, Prabowo also stressed the significance of elite collaboration for national success. He argues that a nation’s prosperity hinges on the ability of its elites to work together, noting that a wealthy or resource-rich country can still struggle if its elites lack unity. “A country, even if it’s rich, even if it’s vast, even if it has extraordinary natural resources, if its elites cannot work together – especially if its elites are thieves – it’s impossible for that country to succeed,” Prabowo concluded.
The Role of PDIP
Interestingly, despite not being part of Prabowo’s government coalition, PDIP has shown a degree of cooperation and respect toward the administration. Two high-ranking PDIP officials, General Treasurer Olly Dondokambey and Central Leadership Council Chair Said Abdullah, attended the Gerindra anniversary event in Sentul. This gesture highlights the potential for productive relationships between competing political entities.
Call for Constructive Engagement
President Prabowo’s stance on constructive criticism and unity sends a clear message about the direction he intends to take in his administration. By fostering an environment where parties are open to collaboration and feedback, he aims to enhance governance and ensure policy effectiveness. This approach not only strengthens the government’s credibility but also promotes a more inclusive and democratic political landscape.
