Adding to the challenges, the Rv. 85 Bognes – Lødingen ferry service, frequently enough a detour when the bridge is closed, is temporarily suspended due to the same high winds. In Tromsø, the Sandnessund Bridge is experiencing intermittent closures, forcing travelers to consider a lengthy three-hour detour via Nordkjosbotn.

Avalanche Risks Heighten Across Northern and Southern Regions

Beyond the immediate impact of high winds,Norway is also contending with a heightened risk of snow avalanches, particularly in the northern and southern parts of the country. This dual threat poses significant challenges for residents and travelers alike.

Northern Norway: Road Closures and Avalanche Assessments

The E6 between Kjerringbergelva and Langnes in Alta municipality remains closed due to recent snow avalanches. Clean-up efforts are underway, with a reassessment scheduled for 2 PM on Sunday to determine if the road can be safely reopened. The choice route involves a considerable detour through Finland via E8 Skibotndalen and E45 Aidejavri.

As of Sunday morning, a total of 11 roads in Troms and finnmark are closed due to avalanche risks. Authorities plan to conduct further assessments throughout the afternoon to evaluate the possibility of reopening these routes.

the avalanche danger is currently rated as significant (level 3 out of 5) in Nordenskiöld Land, Vest-Finnmark, Nord-Troms, Lyngen, Svartisen, and Helgeland. Svalbard South faces an even greater risk, with a danger level of 4.

Southern Norway: Increased Avalanche Danger Expected

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has issued a warning for southern Norway, forecasting a significant increase in avalanche danger (level 3) starting Monday.Regions including Indre Fjordane, jotunheimen, and Indre Sogn, currently at a moderate risk (level 2), are expected to see conditions worsen.

Persistent weak layers in the snow cover combined with wind and snowfall provide a intricate situation that can lead to landslides, both naturally triggered and remote trigger.

NVE assessment of Jotunheimen and Indre Sogn

NVE advises that navigating avalanche terrain requires extensive knowledge, experience in route selection, and the ability to identify potential hazards. The agency recommends avoiding slopes steeper than 30 degrees and maintaining a safe distance from runout zones.
