A celebrated figure in Lithuanian theater and cinema, povilas Stankus, has died.

Povilas Stankus, a veteran actor of the klaipėda Drama Theater, has died at the age of 86. The news was shared on the actor’s Facebook account, according to a colleague.
The message stated: “Povilas Stankus, a longtime actor of Klaipėda Drama Theater, died in 1939 – 2025.”
The proclamation also detailed that the deceased will be at the “Gate of Age Gate” (Klaipėda, Orthodox 7) in the main hall. I. Reklaitis stated that visiting hours will commence on August 25th at 4 p.m., and the coffin will be removed on August 26th at 11 a.m.
Born on May 1, 1939, in Rietavas, P. Stankus began his artistic journey at the Lithuanian Conservatoire,where he studied acting under the tutelage of Irena Vaišytė. he initially worked as an announcer for Lithuanian radio and television before finding his true calling in the theater.
From 1963 to 2007, P. Stankus dedicated himself to the Klaipėda Drama Theater. Over his career, he played more than 100 roles, becoming a key figure in the theater’s ensemble. He portrayed both past and fictional characters, earning the admiration of audiences and critical acclaim.

P. Stankus’s notable stage credits include Mindaugas Justinas Marcinkevičius’s drama “Mindaugas” (1969 and 1980), “Švitrigaila” in “The Giant Shade” (1974), “Herkus Mantas” (1990), as well as roles in “Tulas Aufidijus,” “Leonatas,” “Čičinskas,” “Bubnovas,” and “Bishop Motiejus Valančius.”
In addition to his theatrical work, P. Stankus also appeared in numerous Lithuanian films and television productions. he was featured in popular films such as “Men’s Summer” (1970), “Woman and Four Men” (1984), “Fish Day” (1989), “Autumn Comes” (1990), “Passengers of the Earth” (1992), “Elze from Gilija” (1999), and “One.”
His performances in these films brought to life memorable characters that have enriched Lithuanian cinema.
