Porsche Dominates Daytona 24 Hours as IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Begins

Date: January 25, 2025

In the opening laps of the highly anticipated 24 Hours of Daytona, Porsche Penske Motorsport’s No. 7 Porsche 963 secured the lead in the championship’s first round. This achievement marks a strong start for the reigning champions, who were victors in last year’s event.

Porsche’s Robust Start: Struggles with Grip, But Solid Performance

The No. 7 Porsche 963 began the race with determination and skill, steadily moving to the front during the first crucial four hours. The sister car, the No. 6, joined in second place, showcasing their prowess on the track. Meanwhile, a Proton Competition Porsche 963 managed to secure sixth position. The sunny skies, however, paired with cold air temperatures around 14 degrees Celsius, initially posed challenges for the high-performance cars.

According to Urs Kuratle, Head of Factory Motorsport LMDh, “Our goal was to make it through the opening laps unscathed – and we achieved that. Initially, we struggled somewhat with the tires, reaching the optimal operating window late and losing some time. After that, things improved considerably. Our team and drivers have delivered strong performances so far. I am optimistic.”

Initial Battles in the GTD Classes

The GTD class offered intense competition right from the start. Wright Motorsports’ No. 120 Porsche 911 GT3 R led with a nearly 30-second gap from pole position. American driver Elliott Skeer navigated skillfully through the opening laps. However, after handing over to teammate Adam Adelson, the car faced some setbacks, including a spin, and dropped to the midfield. By the four-hour mark, Ayhancan Güven, replacing Adelson at the wheel, brought the car up to third place, demonstrating resilience.

The Iron Dames No. 83 car demonstrated consistent improvement, moving closer to the front during the early stages. In the GTD-Pro class, the “Rexy” 911 GT3 R of AO Racing took a significant hit. A poorly timed yellow flag hindered its progress. Meanwhile, another Proton Competition Porsche, maintaining its position in the lower midfield, showcased the brand’s staying power.

Driver Insights: Adapting to Challenging Conditions

Drivers across all categories shared their experiences with the challenging conditions during the opening phase. “We could not quite match the pace of the leaders early on,” reported Matt Campbell of the No. 6 Porsche 963. “However, our performance improved显著 in the second stint, and we managed the tires well over the distance.”

“Despite the bright sunshine, track temperatures were quite low initially,” explained Felipe Nasr of the No. 7 Porsche 963. “This led to some sliding, but fortunately, our car remained intact and felt good. We’re running as expected.”

Laurin Heinrich, driver of the No. 77 Porsche 911 GT3 R in GTD-Pro, faced setbacks during pit stops and yellow flags but posted a strong second stint. “I was lucky not to lose much time in traffic,” stated Heinrich. “Unfortunately, circumstances cost us some ground, but there’s still plenty of time to compete.”

Elliott Skeer echoed the competitive spirit. “The opening laps at Daytona are always special. Knowing it’s a long race, everyone tries to make an impact early on. I seized the opportunity to overtake several GTD-Pro cars and maintain my lead.”
