Pope Francis: Diplomacy & Dialogue for Peace | El Independiente

Pope Leo

Before representatives of the diplomatic corps, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani, the pontiff stressed that the current international scenario is marked by conflicts and abuses, and warned that the true antagonist of dialogue is not silence, but offense.

“Silence can open us to listening and welcoming the voice of the other; the offense, on the other hand, becomes a verbal attack, a war of words fueled by lies, propaganda and hypocrisy,” he noted.

In that sense, he asked diplomats to assume the commitment to “disarm the speeches”, betting on messages that are not only clear and precise, but also honest and prudent. He stressed that whoever masters the art of communicating does not need to have an abundance of words, but rather choose the right ones.

The Pope invited people to share expressions that promote the common good, strengthen understanding between the parties, correct errors and encourage forgiveness. “Whoever abandons dialogue also abandons the hope of peace,” he warned.

During his message, he recalled the historic call of Saint Paul VI before the General Assembly of the United Nations, six decades ago, when he cried: “Never again war! May peace guide the destiny of peoples and of all humanity.”

Leo XIV reiterated that peace is a supreme and universal good, and urged diplomats to interpret the signs of the times from a perspective of Christian humanism, the basis of Italian and European culture. He concluded by pointing out that diplomacy must be in the hands of those who firmly believe in dialogue, even in the face of tensions and difficulties, and trust in mutual understanding as a way to resolve conflicts.
