In 2024, despite health challenges that canceled his trip to COP28 in Dubai, Pope Francis maintained an ambitious travel schedule. He attracted large crowds in Asia, visited Corsica for the first time in history, and toured Belgium and Luxembourg. His extensive travels highlighted his dedication to interfaith dialogue, Catholic engagement, and addressing global issues.

Asia-Pacific Journey Draws Historic Crowds
Francis’s most extensive apostolic journey, a 12-day tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania, included visits to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste. He celebrated mass before thousands of faithful in each location.
In Jakarta, at the Istiqlal Mosque, the pope met with Muslim leaders to sign a joint declaration against religious-based violence, emphasizing the importance of interfaith collaboration.

The largest gathering occurred in Dili, Timor-Leste, with an estimated 750,000 attendees, nearly two-thirds of the population. Here, Francis emphasized the vital role of children in dispelling global crises.

Papal Journey in Secular Europe
September also saw tensions during Pope Francis’s visit to Belgium, where he faced criticism from Prime Minister Alexander De Croo over comments on abortion. The pope referred to abortion as ‘homicide’ and called doctors who perform the procedure ‘contract killers,’ which De Croo deemed ‘absolutely unacceptable.’

The controversy overshadowed the celebrations for the 600th anniversaries of the Catholic universities in Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve. In Luxembourg, Francis challenged Catholics to evangelize in an increasingly secular society, stressing the importance of responsibility with wealth.
Pope and President Share a Moment
The year concluded with a historic visit to Corsica, the first-ever papal visit to the island. During his stay, Francis addressed popular piety, recognizing the importance of local traditions in maintaining Catholic identity. Despite the small island’s population, over 7,000 people attended his Mass.

Traditional Corsican hymns filled the air as Francis celebrated in various events. On his final day, the pope met with French President Emmanuel Macron, sharing a moment of levity on the importance of maintaining a sense of humor.
