Ponyboi Premieres at Sundance 2024, Lauded as Landmark Queer Cinema

Esteban Arango’s “Ponyboi,” starring River Gallo, captivates audiences at the Sundance Film Festival with its poignant story of identity and belonging in New Jersey.

A film that resonates deeply with its audience is a rare find. Esteban Arango’s *Ponyboi*, showcased in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, appears to be one such film, poised to become a significant work within queer cinema.

The film’s premiere on January 20 at the Library Center Theater in Park City, utah, garnered enthusiastic responses. One audience member described *Ponyboi* as “one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” adding, “I laughed, I cried, I had a meltdown, it was amazing.”

*Ponyboi* unfolds over a single valentine’s Day in New Jersey, following the life of Ponyboi (played by screenwriter River Gallo), an intersex sex worker. The day involves a series of dramatic events, including a drug deal gone awry, the arrival of a compelling stranger, strained friendships, and an attempted escape.

The Genesis of Ponyboi

“It started deep in the depths of New jersey,” says Gallo, explaining the film’s origins. “It started out of a desire to want to express the different ways in which I felt like an outsider in my life through different intersecting identities – being intersex, being Latinx, being from New Jersey, which, I think, has a special liminal relationship to reality.”

“The movie is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life…I laughed, I cried, I had a meltdown, it was incredible.”

Gallo elaborates on this “liminal relationship,” stating, “Living next to New York, where all yoru dreams are possible, to being just a bridge and tunnel away from all of that, and just the concept of being so close, yet so far, to who you wanna be and the life that you want. And I think for a long time, I was haunted by that.”

Finding Beauty in the Grit

Arango, who previously presented his film *Blast Beat* at the 2020 Festival, shares the vision behind *ponyboi*: “Our vision was ‘find the beauty behind the grit, behind the ugly bits of New Jersey.’ There’s so much beauty. That’s why you see so much contrast in this movie. It’s filled with sadness, but so much joy as well. So much hope.”
