The Polisario is ready to accept the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco for the Sahara, but only if it is validated by referendum, the head of diplomacy of the separatist movement told AFP.
Indeed, Mohamed Yeslem Beissat gave details on a “ extended proposal » presented Monday by the Polisario to the UN Security Council. Thus, the latter must examine a new resolution on the Sahara on October 31, in a context of American pressure to reach a solution.

In this context, the Polisario is “ a step towards the Moroccans but discussing the autonomy proposal outside the framework of a referendum is not possible and cannot be accepted in any form », affirmed the Polisario representative.
The UN has been calling for several years to resume negotiations, interrupted since 2019, to achieve a “ feasible, sustainable and mutually acceptable political solution “. After the spectacular announcement in 2020 by Donald Trump of American support for this proposal, Morocco successively obtained the support of a series of countries including Spain, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
