Polestar came to the market in 2019 with a single model. This was a plug-in hybrid coupe with a really attractive design. Most of those who were able to attend its international presentation hailed the company’s aesthetics. Shortly after, Polestar presented its first electric car and, from then on, everyone had the same mechanics.
The company, like Volvo, is part of the Chinese conglomerate Geely Group. This would give it access to key components, such as hybrid systems or combustion engines. However, Polestar completely denies this and says that its offer will focus entirely on 100% electric vehicles.
Michael Lohscheller makes it clear that there will only be electric cars at Polestar
This has been confirmed by the CEO of Polestar himself, Michael Lohschellerduring a round table in which several international media outlets participated. In his speech, precisely, the manager was asked if they would once again have models with plug-in hybrid mechanics in their range, like many other rival firms.
However, the brand is reluctant to adopt combustion engine cars: “We believe in science. Climate change is real, and that’s why we continue to focus on it. Polestar customers also firmly believe in climate change. If we said, ‘Hey, we’re now putting combustion engines in our cars.’ They’d say, ‘You can’t do it.’ So we don’t even consider it.”
In this way, the CEO denies any possibility of this. So much so that just a few days ago, Polestar unveiled what will be the largest offensive of new models seen so far by the company. Over the next three years, the brand plans to launch four new models. All of them under totally electric mechanics.
“We are doing the right thing, we are firmly convinced of it and we have the backing of science. One of the main reasons why people come to us is that we are a unique company. In meetings, I am often asked: ‘Will you also offer hybrid vehicles?’. And my answer is: ‘No, we will not offer them’. Isn’t that fantastic? We will have zero emissions,” Lohscheller said, according to the media. Autocar.
Given this, the manager continued by confirming that his clients “would not choose outdated technology, but rather a technology of the future.” For them, there is no alternative. “This is a great opportunity to say, ‘We’re accelerating, we’re different.’ We don’t want to be ordinary. This is the best differentiation we can achieve.”
In addition to the already mentioned four electric models that will arrive soon, Polestar is also working on a range of high-performance models, which requires high doses of investment and resources. Regarding these, “hybrids would add unnecessary complexity”, so having fully electric cars will simplify the entire process.
“The mobility of the future simply has to be emission-free, and electrification is the best solution for this. That is our conviction, and that is why we continue on that path. Traditional manufacturers have to do their job, but we don’t, and I run Polestar,” concluded Michael Lohscheller.
