Thai-Cambodian border Tensions addressed Amidst Calls for Unity

The Thai government has addressed the ongoing situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, emphasizing the importance of national unity and peaceful conflict resolution. The declaration follows recent tensions and discussions regarding border demarcation and security.

Following a Cabinet meeting, Ms. Pae Thongthan Shinawatra conveyed the government’s stance on the matter, highlighting the need for all Thai citizens to unite. She stressed that this issue transcends domestic politics and requires a cohesive national front. “When there are international problems Thai people must unite,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of collective support for negotiations and defense of sovereignty.

Ms. Pae Thongthan also addressed social media criticisms linking the Prime Minister to the family of Somdej Hun sen, President of the Cambodian Senate. She defended the relationship, stating, “Leadership relationships do not argue that they are friendly. It’s not a damage that we have friends.” She further clarified that while friendships are valued, national interests remain paramount.

Concerns about potential Cambodian incursions were also raised. When asked about reports of Cambodian forces entering 200 meters into Thai territory, Ms. Pae Thongthan responded, “Have you been to see the event?” She indicated that Mr. Phumtham Vejjachai would visit the area for assessment, inviting media representatives to join.

Diplomatic Efforts and Border Security

Mr. Phumtham Vejjachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Thailand’s sovereignty through established procedures. He stated that the government aims to limit discussions to the “MOU 43 clashing point” and avoid expanding the conflict to the World Court. He reiterated the government’s intention to negotiate with the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) on June 14 to find lasting solutions for the border region.

Local Administration and Community Support

Ms.Trai Santhararonkul,Secretary of the Interior Minister,announced that Mr. Chaiwat Junthiraphong, Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, has issued urgent guidelines to Thai-Cambodian border provinces. These guidelines aim to enhance preventive measures and ensure the safety and security of residents in the region.

In a show of solidarity, villagers in Ubon Ratchathani province have mobilized to support soldiers stationed at the border. They have provided materials, including “old car tires,” to construct “bunkers” and strengthen defenses, demonstrating their commitment to protecting Thai sovereignty.
