From next July 10, the Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli will be the new creative director of Balenciaga. Piccioli is 57 years old and worked for 25 in Valentino, where he had also been creative director for a long time. He had left the company last year, succeeded by Alessandro Michele.
In his years in Valentino, Piccioli had been highly appreciated by criticism and public for the originality and elegance of his collections, but also for his commitment for the inclusiveness in the choice of models and for the enhancement of the work of the seamstresses and tailors of his atelier. His style, which he mainly looks at traditional models, is considered rather different from that typical of Balenciaga, who in recent years has achieved considerable success thanks to an innovative aesthetic and close to the world of street wear.
The recent success of Balenciaga is also linked to the creative direction of Demna Gvasalia, which will leave the assignment after the presentation of the next collection to take it instead to Gucci. Balenciaga is a Spanish company but is controlled by the French group Kering, which also has Gucci.
