You’ve probably been in a situation more than once that makes you feel like you’re in a science fiction movie. Imagine: you are sitting with a friend, sipping coffee and dreaming out loud how delicious a pizza with a crispy crust would be. Just five minutes pass, you pick up your phone, open social networks and – surprise! – the screen is filled with the advertisement of the nearest pizzeria. Coincidence? Skeptics would say yes, but technology experts are increasingly shaking their heads that this is not just a coincidence.
An invisible spy in your pocket
There is a dark side to smart technology that consumers often don’t think about or want to believe. The truth is that our beloved devices can listen to our conversations even when we haven’t explicitly asked them to. According to data provided by the Newsbomb media outlet, several cyber security experts point to a worrying trend: phones running the Android operating system in particular can activate the microphone and record ambient sounds in certain cases.
This does not mean that your phone acts as a permanent recorder, recording every second of your life 24 hours a day. The principle of operation is a little more subtle – usually short audio fragments or keywords are recorded. This data can then be transferred to servers for analysis without you noticing or even suspecting it. This is how your innocent conversation about pizza turns into a targeted promotional offer.

Instructions: How to get your privacy back
Fortunately, the situation is not hopeless and you are not completely powerless against the big tech corporations. There is a way to turn off a feature that potentially turns your personal phone into a little spy. You don’t need to be a programmer to do this – just a few simple clicks in your Google account settings. To do this, first open it Google app on your phone and tap your profile picture in the right corner.
Select from the menu that opens Manage your Google Account (or just join it). Then travel to the section named “Data and Privacy”. Scrolling down you should find a section here “History Settings” or “Web and App Activity“. When you click on it, you will see various options, but the most important one is the option “Include speech and sound activities“. If you see a check mark next to this point, remove it immediately and disable this setting. This will prevent Google from storing your voice recordings on its servers.

Who else is listening to your secrets?
One setup in your Google Account is a great start, but it may not be enough. Experts advise to periodically “hygiene” your phone and check which other apps you have given permission to use the microphone. You’d be surprised to see how many applications require this access for absolutely no reason.
Ask yourself: Does your flashlight app, calculator, or simple game really need to hear what you’re saying? Most of them don’t need this feature at all, unless you insist on dictating your shopping list to TikTok or other entertainment platforms.
Regaining control in a digital age where privacy is a luxury is not something to be taken for granted. It requires awareness and effort. However, by taking a few minutes to review the settings and showing a little vigilance, you can gain peace of mind and be sure that your conversations remain only between you and the interlocutor, and not become a commodity for advertising clients.
