Phoenix Mall Roof Collapse – Latest Updates

by Archynetys News Desk

PHOENIX — The roof of a west Phoenix mall partially collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, crews responded to Desert Sky Mall, located near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road, around 5:30 p.m. for reports of a roof collapse.

When crews arrived on scene, they found that a store in the mall had a partial “drop ceiling” roof collapse that severed a main water line.

Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller confirmed to KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday night that it was a dental office that was affected.

“(It) caused pretty extensive water damage throughout the business and the mall,” Keller said. “Eventually, they shut down the entire mall. City of Phoenix structural engineers are on scene working with Desert Sky Mall management team on turning operations back over to them after they assess the damage.”

Fire officials said the business was open at the time but that no injuries were reported.

According to Phoenix Fire, the west Phoenix mall will be closed for an indefinite amount of time due it being flooded and the sprinklers being disabled.

It is unclear if the partial roof collapse was caused by the thunderstorm moving through the area.
