Philippines and France Conduct Joint Naval and Air Operations in West Philippine Sea
MANILA, Philippines
In a significant demonstration of their commitment to regional security, the Philippines and France have conducted joint naval and air exercises in the West Philippine Sea. These operations aim to strengthen defense cooperation as geopolitical tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific region.
Details of the Maritime Cooperative Activity
The Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the French Carrier Strike Group is a vital bilateral activity. It highlights the military capabilities of both nations and their efforts to enhance interoperability, communication, and strategic defense operations.
French Fleet and Philippine Forces Deployed
The French fleet, led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, included the multi-mission frigate Provence, the supply vessel Jacques Chevallier, the air defense destroyer Forbin, and the Aquitaine-class frigate Alsace.
On the Filipino side, the Philippine Navy and Air Force deployed key assets, including the ships Jose Rizal and Gregorio del Pilar, a C90 aircraft, two FA50 fighter jets, and several search and rescue units.
Exercises Conducted During MCA
The drills focused on various exercises such as communication checks, division tactics, officer of the watch maneuvers, photo exercises, replenishment at sea, personnel exchanges via rigid hull inflatable boats, anti-submarine warfare exercises, and dissimilar aircraft combat training.
AFP Chief Comments on Joint Operations
AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized the importance of these exercises for strengthening defense capabilities in the face of emerging security challenges.
“Through joint maritime cooperative activities and collaborative efforts, the AFP seeks to build a stronger, more resilient defense system that is prepared to address the challenges of the modern security landscape,” he said.
Mission Context
The French strike group’s three-day visit to the Philippines is part of Mission CLEMENCEAU 25, a deployment aimed at reaffirming France’s commitment to regional security and freedom of navigation.
Recent MCAs
The latest MCA with France is the third such activity conducted this month between the AFP and the forces of allied nations.
The first MCA, held on February 5, involved the United States, Australia, Japan, and the Philippines, focusing on strengthening cooperation and interoperability.
The second MCA occurred on February 9, focusing on maritime communication and planning exercises to support regional stability between the AFP and the US Indo-Pacific Command.
Conclusion
These joint operations underscore the importance of international military cooperation in addressing security challenges in the Indo-Pacific. The collaborative efforts between the Philippines and France bolster regional security and demonstrate a proactive approach to maintaining peace and stability.
