Philippine Navy Successfully Concludes 7th Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity with Canada

In a significant demonstration of regional maritime cooperation, the Philippine Navy’s BRP Andres Bonifacio frigate navigated alongside Canada’s HMCS Ottawa warship in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). The event, known as the 7th Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MMCA), was deemed a success by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Wednesday.

Smooth Exercise Despite Monitored Presence of Chinese Warships

The exercises, which took place within the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) operational jurisdiction inside the nation’s exclusive economic zone, continued smoothly despite the presence of Chinese vessels monitored from a distance. Col. Xerxes Trinidad, AFP public affairs office chief, reported that three ships of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, an oceanographic surveillance ship, and a helicopter were observed.

Safeguarding Participants and Adhering to Protocols

Colonel Trinidad emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of all participants. He stated that established and agreed-upon protocols were observed throughout the exercise to maintain security and prevent any adverse situations. While PLAN and other assets were present, they did not interfere during the MMCA.

AFP’s Deployment

The AFP deployed the BRP Andres Bonifacio, a Beechcraft King Air C90 aircraft, and Philippine Air Force search and rescue assets. These resources are crucial for maritime operations and ensuring the safety of the exercises.

Strategic Partnerships and Regional Stability

General Romeo Brawner Jr., AFP chief, highlighted the significance of the multilateral initiative. He emphasized that such partnerships are vital for enhancing regional stability and maritime security. These strategic collaborations not only strengthen interoperability but also foster a collective security framework in the Indo-Pacific region.

Commitment to Mutual Prosperity and International Order

General Brawner also underscored the reinforcement of bonds between partner nations dedicated to mutual prosperity and upholding a rules-based international order. These efforts align with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), a fundamental framework for maritime relations.

NOLCOM’s Role in Promoting Regional Stability

Lt. Gen. Fernyl Buca, NOLCOM chief, echoed this sentiment, stating that participation in the MMCA reinforces their commitment to protecting maritime territory, securing sovereign rights, and working with allies to promote regional stability.

“NOLCOM’s involvement in these activities is a testament to our dedication to maintaining maritime domain awareness and ensuring the safety and security of the nation’s maritime interests,” Gen. Buca added.
