Back in August, the first-ever Wavegarden Cove facility to hit the US of A opened its doors at Atlantic Surf Park, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Wavegarden, based out of Spain, has manmade surf pools around the world – spanning from Europe to Brazil to Australia – but Atlantic Surf Park was the inaugural edition of the wave-making technology to officially break ground (and waves) in America.
And backing the $350m Virginia Beach venture was one of the town’s native, and most prominent, sons: Pharrell Williams. But since its grand opening, we have yet to see the music mogul actually riding waves at his own investment in the community. Until now.
In a post from Michael Landers, founder of Iconiq Capital, the multihyphenate rapper, producer, and fashion icon catches a wave at Atlantic Surf Park in what would appear to be the first public glimpse at Pharrell surfing. So, how’d he do?
First off, something previously unknown: Pharrell is a regular-footer. He catches a wave – seemingly on the beginner setting, as it looks like the inside of the basin, rather than the peak, where the wave pitches in a steeper manner – pops right up to his feet, and cruises for a few seconds. And, of course, Pharrell did it in style.
Decked out in a wetsuit with the signature three white lines, the getup looks like it’s from Adidas, a frequent collab partner of Pharrell. The fitness brand hasn’t delved into surfwear or accessories in the past, but perhaps this is a new start for them.

Previously, Pharrell had celebrated the opening of Atlantic Surf Park by dropping an entire line of clothing and trappings, including a $1,200 surfboard. And he welcomed the Black surfing crewEbony Surf Club, to the wave pool. After that session, they noted:
“Pharrell has done so much for the intersection of culture & skateboarding, so it was so aligned and also unreal for us to be able to be a part of his intersection of culture & surfing.”
