President Gustavo Petro spoke out in response to press reports about alleged accusations by Hugo “El Pollo” Carvajal, former head of intelligence of Venezuela, about Chavismo financing his political career. The Colombian president asserted that it is not a new issue and that he has always retracted it.

“He has always said that for a decade, and for a decade, when he goes to the judges, they ask him about my case, and he always judicially reverses himself.”said the Colombian president compared to what Carvajal supposedly told the US authorities.

The mentions of President Gustavo Petro are not new by Carvajal, nor are the documents on the information provided and revealed by the Spanish media. The publication was made due to the imminent conviction against Carvajal in the United States, this after pleading guilty on June 25.

Carvajal had initially been detained in Spain and was later extradited to the United States. There he faces a trial before the Southern District of New York for having been one of the founders of the Cartel of the Suns, a criminal organization whose existence the Colombian president denies.
