The American giant Oldcastle Architectural, based in Atlanta, closed its Permacon paving and slab factory in Saint-Eustache last Thursday.

“On October 16, Permacon ceased operations at its Saint-Eustache plant as part of a broader effort to optimize its operations while continuing to meet market demand in Eastern Canada,” confirmed to Journal the vice-president of Permacon, Lucas Vallon.

“Our teams work closely with them [les travailleurs] to support them in the next steps and facilitate access to available resources,” adds the senior manager of Permacon for five years.

The number of employees affected by this factory closure remains unknown at this time.

Some 400 employees work for Permacon at various sites in Quebec and Ontario. The company has more than 900 distribution points.

The company emphasizes that it will continue to serve its customers since it has made investments in the country.

Permacon is recognized here for its exterior coverings and landscaping.

Quebec roots

Founded in Quebec 73 years ago, Permacon was previously called Bloc Vibré.

The company subsequently merged with Les Industries Fortier in 1986, before taking the name Permacon.

It was in 2001 that the American concrete products company Oldcastle Architectural acquired the Quebec company.
