Revolutionizing Physiotherapy: How AI is Tackling Long Wait Times
Back pain is a common complaint that too many people suffer from without timely relief. For Peace Emezue, years of enduring back pain came to a head, threatening her quality of life. Faced with months-long wait times for in-person physiotherapy, she found herself without hope. However, a new digital solution is offering hope to those in similar situations.
A Digital Solution to Physiotherapy
After a frustrating experience with NHS Lothian’s long wait times, Peace Emezue was introduced to Flok Health, an AI-powered physiotherapy app. Initially skeptical, she quickly became an advocate for this innovative solution. “I self-referred like three times, nothing back, just getting letters saying you’re on the list and we have so much people on the list and because of that you have to be patient,” she told STV News. The app provided an immediate solution to her problem.
How Flok Health Works
Flok Health leverages artificial intelligence and video technology to deliver personalized physiotherapy sessions. The app features a virtual physiotherapist named Amy who guides users through a series of stretches and exercises. By asking questions, Amy tailors the treatment plan to each patient’s specific needs. “Amy tried to tell me what is wrong with me, something about a nerve, from my stretches. She asks me questions like ‘how do you feel about this?’. You have to really be honest, and from my symptoms she’s able to tell me what stretches to do,” Peace shared her experience.
The Benefits of AI in Healthcare
The developers of Flok Health aim to make physiotherapy more accessible and alleviate the pressure on in-person services. By providing early and frequent access to care, the app can help patients manage their conditions more effectively. “Demand is increasing all the time,” said Co-Founder Finn Stevenson. “And we know that if you can give people early frequent access to a multidisciplinary care pathway for these conditions they’ll do well.” The technology seeks to offer relief without completely replacing traditional in-person care.
Physiotherapist Perspectives
While the concept of AI replacing human physiotherapists may concern some, many professionals view it as a complementary tool. Phil Ackerman, a consultant MSK physiotherapist at NHS Lothian, expressed his enthusiasm for the technology. “It’s an exciting opportunity to really understand and explore and look at this technology and where it could complement and support our existing services,” he said. The app provides an additional option for patients to receive personalized care.
Future Expansions and Applications
Flok Health currently focuses on back pain management, but the company aims to expand its offerings to include other conditions. The app’s developers are already in discussions with health boards across Scotland and England about extending its reach. The goal is to make advanced, personalized healthcare more available and accessible to everyone.
Conclusion: A Step Forward in Healthcare
The integration of AI into physiotherapy represents a significant leap forward in healthcare delivery. By providing immediate access to tailored exercises and care plans, Flok Health addresses the growing issue of wait times and enhances patient outcomes. As AI technology continues to evolve, it has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry, offering efficient and effective solutions to common health challenges.
