Paul Wight’s Captain Insano Making Waves in AEW: A Trademark Update
Paul Wight’s iconic character from The Waterboy could be set to return to wrestling, specifically AEW. Recent developments suggest that the wrestling promotion has taken significant steps to bring Captain Insano back into the ring.
Trademark Filing Reveals AEW’s Plans
In a move that fans have been eagerly awaiting, documents from the US Patent & Trade Office reveal that AEW filed to trademark “Captain Insano” for wrestling purposes on January 24, 2025. This filing marks the second time AEW has sought to trademark the name, with the first attempt in 2021 focusing on video games and digital media.
In 2021, the filing covered various digital products, including video game cartridges, DVDs, downloadable content, and CDs featuring wrestling themes. The recent trademark, however, specifically targets performances by a professional wrestler. This indicates a potential plan to bring the character into the ring for in-ring action.
Paul Wight and Captain Insano: A Brief History
Captain Insano first appeared as Paul Wight’s alter ego in the 1998 film The Waterboy. The character’s popularity extended beyond the big screen, with Wight reprising the role recently at the Country Music Association Awards in November. Wearing full wrestling gear, he made a surprise appearance on stage during Bailey Zimmerman’s performance of “New to Country.”
Wight’s Return to the Ring: Hopes and Challenges
Paul Wight hasn’t stepped into the ring since the Jericho Cruise in January 2024. However, there have been indications that he is eager to make a return. During a visit to Downunder the Ring in September, Wight expressed his desire to come back to AEW, particularly to play Captain Insano in his final wrestling run.
“Captain Insano was a pretty cool gift. Tony Khan worked it out, got the intellectual property rights for me. So we’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on that. Just to be honest, a lot of it’s been my fault. Having surgeries and stuff like that. So it’s about me getting in the gym, training, getting ready where I feel comfortable. Because it’s basically a one-shot run. You know, I can’t pull the trigger on this half-assed and go out and fail. When I pull the trigger on Captain Insano, it’s got to be 100 percent. We run that until the wheels fall off and then we ride off into the sunset,” Wight explained.
What to Expect in the Future
While the future is uncertain, the recent trademark application suggests considerable planning on AEW’s part. Fans can expect to see more movements towards bringing Captain Insano to the AEW roster if Wight is physically prepared and agrees to the terms.
