Documentaries often reflect a specific viewpoint when the filmmaker interacts with their subjects on screen, diverging from purely observational styles. In the case of director matt Wolf and his long-sought subject, Paul Reubens, the very act of gaining access became a study in itself.

According to Wolf, their collaboration on the two-part documentary Pee-wee as Himself, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 23, was designed to capture their dynamic. Wolf noted that Reubens,while gregarious and confident,harbored a deep ambivalence about public exposure.

Reubens’ reservations about fame are understandable, given the career setbacks he faced following legal issues in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Wolf’s documentary utilizes a vast collection of archival footage, home videos, and interviews with Reubens’ inner circle to trace the comedian’s journey from childhood to his resurgence in the 2010s. While Pee-wee Herman is a central figure, Reubens also shares previously private aspects of his life.

While revelations about his early years,relationships,and sexuality add depth,the most compelling moments arise from Reubens’ interactions with the director.

Wolf explained that observing Reubens in vérité style was crucial to understanding him. “It’s the ways in which he dodged sharing who he was and used humor to deflect, but also then poured into this revealing and intimate and thoughtful and profound statement. Paul and I would talk about our conflict and our dynamic and his discomfort with our relationship on camera.And I think it was cathartic for him and helpful to just put it out in the open in front of other people, and he did it in ways that were often really funny.”

Reubens’ skillful deflections, honed thru improv and comedic mastery, often blur the line between jest and sincerity.

Notably, Reubens kept his cancer diagnosis from the film crew, passing away in 2023 before the project reached its intended conclusion. Nevertheless, his legacy permeates the documentary. Wolf hopes that “Paul is reappraised as a generation-defining artist” and that audiences will reconsider any dismissals of his artistic achievements due to his past legal troubles. Ultimately, he wishes for a new generation to discover and be transformed by Reubens’ timeless work.
