After the gladiator, the playwright. Paul Mescal will play William Shakespeare in HamnetChloé Zhao’s next film. The Irish actor appointed to the Oscars to Aftersun will play alongside Jessie Buckley, in the role of Agnes, the author’s partner. Joe Alwyn and Emily Watson complete the cast of this film shot in Wales last summer.
Hamnet, an only son of William and Agnès Shakespeare, is only eleven years old when he dies. Both parents must go through this loss and learn to live after the death of their only son. A human story, centered on the partner of the playwright, which serves as a backdrop for the creation of Hamletone of the most famous pieces in Shakespeare.
A prestigious production
History is only a pure fiction: it is inspired by the eponymous novel by Maggie O’Farrell, published in 2020. The latter participated in writing the script alongside Chloé Zhao. Steven Spielberg also joined the film as a producer, with Sam Mendes.
Hamnet marks the return of Chloé Zhao behind the camera, after his Oscar for the best film for Neither in 2021, and the failure of Eternal For the Marvel franchise. The intimate drama is released in theaters next November in the United States and is already one of the favorites in the race for awards, especially the Oscars. The French release date is not yet known.
