Patrick Roy too Remain Coach of the New York Icelanders

New managing director Mathieu Darche confirmed that Roy would stay on as coach, while announcing changes to the assistant coaching staff.


The New York Icelanders will retain Patrick roy as thier head coach, according to new managing director Mathieu Darche at his introductory press conference on Thursday. As taking over from Lane Lambert on January 20, 2024, Roy has a record of 55 wins, 47 losses, and 17 overtime losses.

However, Darche announced that assistant coaches John Maclean and Tommy Albelin, along with all coaches from the Icelanders of Bridgeport, would not be returning.

The Icelanders (35-35-12) failed to reach the playoffs this season, ending their campaign nine points behind the Montreal Canadians. They ranked 31st in the NHL for power play percentage (12.6%) and penalty kill percentage (72.2%). The team also lost 12 games in overtime and suffered 20 defeats decided by a single goal. Their 26 power play goals placed them last in the league,while the eight shorthanded goals they allowed were the fifth-highest total.

New York played without Mathew Barzal for the final 31 games of the season after he sustained a lower body injury blocking a shot against the Lightning of Tampa Bay on February 1. Barzal had also missed 21 games between November 1 and December 12 due to an upper body injury.

The Icelanders made the playoffs last season after Roy guided the team to a 20-12-5 record in the final 37 games.However, they were eliminated in five games in the first round by the Hurricanes of Caroline.

Darche succeeded Lou Lamoriello, whose contract as general manager and president was not renewed on april 22.Lamoriello, 82 years old, served the Islanders for seven seasons. His 1470 wins as a general manager with the Devils of New Jersey, Maple leafs of Toronto, and Icelanders rank second in NHL history behind David Poile (1533). Lamoriello’s 325 games in the STANLEY Cup eliminatory series are the most among all general managers, and his 172 victories rank second to Glen Sather (187).

Roy joined the icelanders after leading the Quebec ramparts of the Maritimes-Québec Junior Hockey League to a Memorial Cup victory in 2023, during his second stint coaching the team. He also won the Memorial Cup in 2006 with Quebec.
