Pastor Tammy Harris: A Journey of Hope After Overcoming Breast Cancer

DES MOINES, Iowa — Pastor Tammy Harris shares her inspiring story of resilience and hope after beating breast cancer, a journey described as the longest of her life.

"I’m Feeling Like an Overcomer"

Pastor Harris was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2023 after a routine mammogram revealed a mass. She underwent surgery and weeks of radiation, yet chose to keep her illness a secret. "We don’t talk about that stuff," she admitted, referring to the taboo surrounding illness within the Black community. "It’s a tragedy for us."

The Disparities in Breast Cancer Death Rates

According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Black women face a higher death rate from breast cancer, up to 38% higher, despite being diagnosed at the same rate as white women. "The survival rate is all about the same if we find breast cancer at the early stage, whether you are White, Hispanic, Black, Asian, or Pacific Islander," explained MercyOne general surgeon Dr. Susan Beck, who handled Harris’ breast cancer treatment. "But with every stage of cancer, Black women have a higher mortality."

Sharing Her Story and Inspiring Others

On a Sunday afternoon at Elpis Christian Fellowship, church members wore pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This marked a significant shift for Pastor Harris, who previously kept her illness a secret. "That’s my quest to publicly share my testimony with them," she said. "I’m a champion for it now. I’ve accepted it. I’ve gotten to the place that if God allowed me to have cancer, then there is a purpose for me."

Importance of Regular Mammograms

It’s crucial for women beginning when they turn 40 (or earlier, if necessary due to family history) to start regular mammograms. Early detection is key to increasing survival rates.

Conclusion

Pastor Tammy Harris’ story offers inspiration and a call to action for others to advocate publicly about their health. By sharing her experience, she aims to raise awareness and inspire women to prioritize their health, particularly in underserved communities.
