Wildfire Consumes 75 Hectares in Hoge Kempen National Park

A significant wildfire swept through the Hoge Kempen National Park in Maasmechelen, Belgium, on Thursday evening, destroying an estimated 75 hectares of heathland. The blaze, which started along the Steenweg to As, prompted a swift response from the East Limburg fire brigade around 10 PM. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by midnight and entirely extinguished it by 2 AM.

According to the East Limburg fire zone, the environmental damage is considerable. “The damage to nature will be great, but the local residents were not in danger,” stated Mayor Van As Tom Seurs.

Inquiry Underway to Determine Cause

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Karen Desmedt, spokesperson for the fire brigade zone, noted, “The cause of the fire is still being investigated.” Desmedt added, “The flora will recover quickly, as it was about heathland and grass. The fire brigade was able to stop the flames before they could reach the forest edge. There were about three hundred sheep on the heath, but they were never directly in danger.”

The public prosecutor’s office is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire. “Three seperate hot spots have been established, which we always regard as suspicious,” officials stated, raising concerns about potential arson.

“It was an exceptionally hefty fire,” confirmed Mayor Seurs. “It was a challenge for the fire brigade to get it under control.”

The Maasmechelen fire brigade received assistance from fire stations in Genk, lanaken, Bilzen, and Bree. Drones and helicopters were deployed to map the three identified hot spots.Mayor Seurs acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating,”it was an exceptionally hefty fire. It was a challenge for the fire brigade to get it under control. the situation was hampered by the extreme drought and the wind.”

Code Red Declared Amidst Drought Conditions

The massive smoke plume was visible in several neighboring municipalities, including opgrimbie, Mopertingen, Rekem, and Lanaken, where residents reported smelling smoke. A “code red” has been in effect in Limburg since May 13 due to prolonged drought conditions, which have substantially increased the risk of wildfires. Authorities are urging the public to avoid nature and forest areas, exercise caution, and refrain from smoking or making fires near these zones. Nature managers and the fire brigade are maintaining heightened vigilance and deploying additional resources.

Flemish environmental minister Jo Brouns (CD&V) visited the site on Friday and announced plans to invest in smart heat cameras equipped with artificial intelligence to improve fire detection in the Mechelen heath within the Hoge Kempen National Park. Similar systems are already in use in the Kalmthoutse Heide and Bosland.

How do wildfires impact the environment?
Wildfires can have both short-term and long-term impacts on the environment. They can release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contribute to soil erosion, and alter ecosystems. However, some ecosystems are adapted to fire and can benefit from it.
