A Community Celebrates Health and Nature
Despite the inclement weather, approximately one hundred individuals, including Seongnam City Mayor Shin Sang-jin, members of the National Assembly, City Council representatives, Daejang-dong resident leaders, and local inhabitants, gathered on april 12th at 2 PM to inaugurate the “Color of the Barefoot Trail Road” in Daejang-dong, Bundang-gu.This event marks a significant step towards promoting wellness and community engagement through accessible green spaces.

Investing in Well-being: The Daejang-dong Barefoot Trail
The newly established barefoot trail, a 300-meter-long path ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 meters in width, represents a substantial investment of ₩360 million in the well-being of Daejang-dong residents. Constructed from packed masato
(a type of decomposed granite soil), the trail extends from the park’s outdoor stage to the gateball court, offering a natural and therapeutic walking experiance.
Beyond the trail itself, the project includes thoughtfully designed amenities. birch trees, viburnum shrubs, and vibrant flowers line the path, creating a serene and visually appealing habitat. Strategically placed shade structures and seating areas invite visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Furthermore, convenient facilities such as dust-off stations and shoe storage boxes enhance the user experience.
Mayor’s Vision and Community engagement
During the opening ceremony, Mayor Shin Sang-jin emphasized the importance of resident input in creating meaningful community spaces. I think that the precious suggestion of the residents is made very meaningful because it is barefoot dirt road,
he stated, highlighting the collaborative spirit behind the project.
the ceremony featured performances, celebratory addresses, and interactive activities. Mayor Shin actively participated in the tape-cutting ceremony and joined residents in experiencing the barefoot trail firsthand, demonstrating the city’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles.
The Growing Trend of Barefoot Trails
Seongnam City’s commitment to barefoot trails is not isolated. As of July of the previous year, the city had already established eleven Hwangseon-gil
trails in areas such as Sujin, Hope, and Wirye. This initiative reflects a growing global trend towards incorporating natural elements into urban environments to enhance physical and mental well-being. Studies have shown that walking barefoot on natural surfaces can improve balance, reduce stress, and promote a stronger connection with nature. For example, a 2018 study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that earthing
or grounding
(direct skin contact with the Earth’s surface) can have significant positive effects on various health markers.
“Earthing (grounding) refers to the finding of benefits—including better sleep and reduced pain—from walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems that transfer the Earth’s electrons from the ground into the body.”
