“It Was Just an Accident” Claims Palme d’Or at Cannes

The 2025 Cannes Film Festival concluded with Iranian director Jafar Panahi
receiving the prestigious Palme d’Or for his film, “It Was Just an
Accident.” The film marks a important moment in Panahi’s career, being
his first since his release from prison in 2023.
“It Was Just an Accident” delves into the story of a former political
prisoner who kidnaps the man he believes was responsible for his torture.
The protagonist grapples with fellow dissidents over whether to seek
revenge or offer forgiveness. The film is noted for its direct critique
of Iran’s authoritarian regime, and Panahi was present at Cannes to
accept the award.
Neon Continues Palme d’or Acquisition Streak
It marks Panahi’s first film as being released from prison in 2023 and
directly targets Iran’s authoritarian regime.
Neon has acquired its sixth consecutive Palme d’Or winner for distribution
in North America. This year, no single film was considered the clear
favorite leading up to the awards ceremony.
Other Award Winners
Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, known for his role in “Narcos,” won best
actor for his performance in “The Secret Agent.” Nadia melliti, a
newcomer, was awarded best actress for her role in “The Little Sister.”
