Japanese developer Pocket Pair has stirred up controversy by removing a core gameplay mechanic from their popular title, Palworld, just weeks after facing a lawsuit from Nintendo.
Goodbye Pal Spheres, Hello Stand-by Pals!
The recent v0.3.11 update introduces a significant change: players can no longer summon their Pals by throwing Pal Spheres. This coveted ability, reminiscent of Pokémon’s classic approach, has been replaced with a direct summon mechanic, activating Pals by simply holding the Pal Sphere.
The Lawsuit Lingering Shadow
This seemingly abrupt shift comes after Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Pocket Pair, accusing Palworld of infringing on patents related to projectile-summoned creatures. While Pocket Pair has remained silent on the changes, it’s reasonable to speculate that this revision aims to appease Nintendo’s legal concerns.
The lawsuit focuses on three seemingly identical patents protecting the concept of using projectiles to spawn creatures in a 3D environment, specifically for combat purposes. This directly aligns with the previously implemented Pal Sphere summoning system. Players often utilized the throwing mechanic to strategically position their Pals, shielding them from harm or gaining a tactical advantage. This new system eliminates these tactical options, leaving players feeling less in control of their companions.
