The Chip Ganassi Racing driver’s victory from sixth place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval extended his lead in the series standings to a importent 112 points. This win marked his fifth in six races this season, including a streak of three consecutive victories.

At the “500” awards ceremony, teammate Scott Dixon jokingly offered Palou a five-week, all-expenses-paid vacation, starting Thursday, confident that the Spaniard would likely retain his points lead. This confidence reflects Palou’s current dominance.

Even if Palou onyl scores the minimum possible points in the remaining 11 races, he would still finish with an estimated 361 points. To provide context,that total would have placed him 11th overall last year. Given that Palou has previously won at five of the remaining circuits, including multiple wins at three of them, he could potentially secure his third consecutive series championship, and fourth in five years, as early as July.

With a maximum of 54 points available each weekend, Palou holds more than a two-race lead over his competitors. Arrow McLaren drivers pato O’Ward and Christian Lundgaard currently hold second and third positions in the standings, trailing by 112 and 125 points, respectively. O’Ward finished third and Lundgaard seventh in the “500.”

Palou’s dominance is further highlighted by the fact that he has led a total of 163 laps this season, including the final 14 laps of the “500.” In comparison, the drivers ranked second through sixth in the standings have collectively led 157 laps.

Detroit Grand Prix: Palou’s Challenge After Indy Triumph

Following the celebrations of his first Indy win, it remains to be seen how Palou will perform in Detroit. Historically, the past three “500” winners have averaged a 14.3 finish in the Motor City, potentially due to distractions and fatigue from sponsor and media obligations. last year, Palou finished 16th, leading only one lap, though he did win the 2023 race, the first held on the 10-turn, 1.645-mile downtown street circuit.

Detroit Grand Prix: Weekend Schedule

The Detroit Grand Prix weekend begins with the first practice session Friday at 3 p.m.ET (FS2, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). Saturday’s events include the second practice at 9 a.m. and qualifying for the NTT P1 Award at noon, both on FS1.

Sunday features the pre-race warmup at 9:30 a.m. on FS1, followed by the 100-lap race at 12:30 p.m. on FOX.
