Padraig Harrington Sets His Twin Goals for 2025: Winning the Open and Challenging Young Pros

Padraig Harrington Shares Ambitious Goals for 2025: Open Championship and Champions Tour Success

Padraig Harrington, the three-time major champion, has revealed his twin targets for 2025. The 53-year-old Irish golfer aims to become the oldest winner of the Open at Royal Portrush and secure another win against the younger generation on the Champions Tour.

Striving for Glory at Royal Portrush

Harrington expresses his desire to return to the scene of Ireland’s 2019 Open victory, where Shane Lowry triumphed. Portrush is a course that Harrington holds dear, as he believes in its suitability for a major tournament.

“Portrush is a great course, it lends itself to a Major tournament. It was a dream week in 2019, and the icing on the cake was Shane (Lowry) winning,” Harrington said. He mentioned Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, and Séamus Power as potential victors alongside himself.

Challenging the Youths on the Champions Tour

In 2024, despite dealing with pneumonia and a neck injury, Harrington achieved three wins on the Champions Tour, attributing his success to his putting game.

“If I can keep the putter going, maybe there’s a win against the young guys,” Harrington reflected. He acknowledged the physical endurance he still possesses but noted the necessity of managing nerves and mental aspects of the game.

The seasoned golfer expressed confidence in his ability to compete, stating, “The more I win on the Champions Tour, the more comfortable I get. I’ve certainly not ruled myself out from doing it.”

A Day at the Races

Harrington made a trip to Leopardstown Racecourse and celebrated with JP McManus’s team as Perceval Legallois secured victory in the Paddy Power Handicap Chase.

Trainer Gavin Cromwell commented on the milestone, describing it as a “brilliant race” and an “astonishing” victory for jockey Mark Walsh, after several failed attempts.

“He’s threatened to win a big race for a long time and for one reason or another it hasn’t happened, and he kept creeping up in the handicap,” Cromwell said. “It’s lovely to win here at Christmas.”

Mark Walsh, jockey of Perceval Legallois, elaborated on the challenging run-down: “It didn’t go to plan. They kicked on down the back straight and I was a good bit back, but I weaved my way through and he winged the last.” The horse’s victory marked McManus’s fifth win in ten years at Leopardstown.

Conclusion

Padraig Harrington’s diverse ambitions reflect his passion for competitive sports and his resilience in the face of challenges. Whether it’s golf or horse racing, Harrington continues to prove that age does not define capability. His twin targets for 2025 showcase his competitive spirit and unwavering commitment to excellence.
