The Padma Awards were announced on January 25, 2025, a day before Republic Day, honoring distinguished personalities across various fields including arts, social work, public affairs, science, and business. These awards, after the Bharat Ratna, are the highest civilian honors in India: the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan, and the Padma Shri, in descending order of precedence.
The Padma Vibhushan recognizes individuals for “exceptional and distinguished service,” while the Padma Bhushan is awarded for “distinguished service of high order.” The Padma Shri, meanwhile, is bestowed upon individuals for “distinguished service in any field.” This year, seven recipients were honored with the Padma Vibhushan, 19 with the Padma Bhushan, and 113 with the Padma Shri, summing up to 139 awardees in total. Notably, the arts category saw the highest number of honorees, with 51 recipients.
