Manny Pacquiao is set to make his return to boxing after nearly four years, challenging Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title on July 19. The declaration was made Saturday in Las Vegas, marking the comeback of the boxing legend.

Pacquiao, now 46, is the only eight-division champion in boxing history. His last fight was in August 2021, where he lost to Yordenis Ugas by unanimous decision at T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas.

With a career that began in January 1995, Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) has secured titles across multiple weight classes, from flyweight to junior middleweight. He is also scheduled to be inducted into the International Boxing hall of fame on June 8. As his professional debut, only a handful of male fighters have competed after their induction into the IBHOF.

holly Holm, inducted into the IBHOF in 2022, is set to become the first woman to achieve this feat when she faces Yolanda Vega on June 28.

A victory over Barrios would make Pacquiao the first boxer to win a world title as a Hall of Famer.

“I always bring surprises to the fans,” Pacquiao stated at the Las Vegas press conference. “I’m not taking this lightly. I’m pushing myself to the limit preparing for this fight.”

But why is Pacquiao returning now? What are his chances against a younger opponent? Let’s delve into the details.

The Motivation Behind the Return

Pacquiao has expressed his enduring passion for boxing as the primary reason for his comeback.

“I’m coming back because it’s my passion,” Pacquiao explained. “I’ve been gone for four years but I always think about boxing. I really missed it.”

His social media announcement on May 21 emphasized the past significance of the fight, stating, “I’m back,” and concluding with “let’s make history!” Pacquiao aims to become the oldest welterweight champion, surpassing his own record from 2019 when he defeated Keith Thurman at age 40.

The Path to a Title Shot

Despite not having won a fight in several years,Pacquiao’s status as a former champion allowed him to request a title fight upon his return, according to WBC rules. Following his announcement, Pacquiao was ranked no. 5 welterweight by the WBC, behind Devin Haney, Souleyman Cissokho, Conor Benn, and Egidijus Kavaliauskas.

A Look Back: Pacquiao’s Last Performance

Pacquiao’s last fight against Ugas in 2021 revealed a diminished version of the boxing icon. His signature footwork and explosiveness were noticeably absent, making him more predictable.Ugas effectively used his jab and right hand to control the fight, securing a clear victory. CompuBox stats showed Pacquiao landing only 130 of 815 punches (19%), marking his least effective performance as the 2015 fight against Floyd Mayweather. compared to his prime years, Pacquiao’s punch output had decreased substantially.

Mario Barrios, the current WBC welterweight champion, is a tall and rangy fighter from San Antonio.Standing at 6 feet, he presents a challenge for many in the 147-pound division due to his height advantage. Known for his high-volume punching,Barrios often engages in close-quarters brawls.

As turning professional in 2013, Barrios had a 26-0 record before losing to Gervonta Davis in 2021. He then lost to Keith Thurman in 2022 but has since remained undefeated, including a victory over Yordenis Ugas in 2023 for the WBC interim title.

In his latest fight in November, Barrios fought Abel ramos to a split draw on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson undercard.

“Every fight and main event I have been in has prepared me for Manny Pacquiao,” Barrios said. “This is my moment. I’m defending my title against a legend.”

IBHOF Induction: What It Means

Pacquiao’s induction into the International Boxing Hall of fame remains unaffected by his return to the ring. He was voted in prior to announcing his comeback and will be the headliner of this year’s class on June 8, alongside Vinny Paz, Michael Nunn, and others.

Early Prediction

Pacquiao (+300) appeared slow in his loss to Ugas. To overcome Barrios’ physical advantages, he’ll need to recapture his earlier speed and explosiveness. Barrios (-400 favorite) is likely to use his reach to control the distance and outwork Pacquiao, potentially winning by decision.
